Catcalling. Complement or Crime?

Who doesn't love a compliment? They make us feel good about ourselves, boosts our self confidence and gives us a spring in our step… especially when they’re being yelled from the top of scaffolding right? Who doesn't go weak at the knees for a pervy stare? And no doubt that classic wolf whistle is a sure way to make us swoon.

The reality of the matter is, some men think this bizarre interaction is we are looking for. But what we really feel, when honoured enough to receive any attention from these first rate specimens, is scared, embarrassed and a tad bit threatened.
This obviously is a concern for feminist groups, who are outraged that this behaviour is tolerated within society. ‘You aren't animals, control what comes out of your mouths’ Kindness and respect might get you more than a middle finger.

Groups are petitioning for it to be a punishable offence, for men to approach a woman in the street…Whilst there are benefits, maybe it’s a step too far? Would that not be more of a ‘speak only when spoken to’ approach? …Aren't we going for equality rather than superiorism here ladies?
Women who have spoken in the past have been met with much defence on the affronted male side. Claiming we are ‘ungrateful’ or even ‘prudish’. One man stated that we should ‘man up’ and tell them to ‘back off’. He was then informed that a women who had ‘maned up’, was then raped and killed. His response… ‘Then carry a gun’ … well thats just totally a logical solution isn't it.
What this whole matter really comes down to is this:
Male culprits; how about something a little less threatening? 'Good morning’ and a smile would suffice.
Women: Sometimes a man trying to wish you a good day, doesn’t mean he wants to frisk you.
If we want to prove my point to these Catcallers, how about we try shouting something back at them, i.e. “COMMITMENT”, “MORTGAGE” or “I want your babies!”

Keep the peace on the streets, meow.
